Analytics
A major part of my role is the constant review and maintenance of the University level website. This is to ensure that it is constantly meeting the needs of the audience and the business objectives.
I have experience of a number of tools that give me information that I can use for informing business decisions online, these include:
- web analytic packages - I currently use Unica NetInsight and Google Analytics in the course of my work. NetInsight produces data from the webserver log files and is used as internal traffic can be filtered out of the results. Google Analytics is tag based and gives us a great deal of additional path data.
- search logs - I make extensive use the major search engines webmaster tools including Google, Bing and Yahoo! to monitor the viability of the various websites that I manage. In addition I monitor the reports generated by the internal search engine - Google Mini - to ensure that the users experience is improved and gaps in content are filled.
- surveys and research - I've worked with a number of external companies to produce market research activities to gather both quantitative and qualitative feedback on a number of areas of the website.
